Where to base yourself

Sarajevo, Mostar, or a border crossing and back before dinner.

A capital in a bowl of hills with a war it still explains, an Ottoman river town two and a half hours south, and a whole industry of day trips coming the other way from the Dalmatian coast.

The Herzegovina day

Kravice, Blagaj and Počitelj are one long day, not three.

Every Herzegovina day out →

The falls on the Trebižat, the dervish house where the Buna comes out of the cliff and the Ottoman village stacked above the Neretva sit inside forty minutes of each other. Nearly every tour strings them together. What each stop adds, and what a seat costs.

Sarajevo

Sarajevo: the siege first, then the coffee.

★★★★★★★★★★4.9· 1,335 travellers on the day out that leads the city

Eight hundred metres of hand-dug tunnel under the airport runway, the frontline streets above the Miljacka, then the copper lane in Baščaršija and a coffee poured out of a džezva. Three kinds of afternoon carry most of this city.

The war day

A guide who was here for it

3–4h· small group· fees usually included

The strongest of these are led by people who spent 1992 to 1996 in the city, and they are careful with it. Expect the tunnel, a frontline position and the hills the shelling came from.

The one site

The tunnel under the runway

2–3h· museum entry· hotel pickup

A house on the airport perimeter with twenty surviving metres of the tunnel underneath it. Short, and the single clearest hour you will spend on the siege.

The first afternoon

Baščaršija on foot

2h· small group· ends over coffee

Ottoman and Habsburg Sarajevo meet on one street corner and the guides all stop at it. Two hours, and everything afterwards makes more sense.

Mostar

Mostar is a bridge, a bazaar and about four hours.

The Stari Most went into the Neretva in 1993 and came back out of it in 2004, stone by stone. In summer the divers still go off the parapet once the hat has been filled. The old town on either side is small, which is why almost every tour adds the falls and makes a day of it.

Every Mostar day out →
The 1990s

The siege is why most people come to Sarajevo at all.

The tunnel under the runway, the frontline above Grbavica, the shell scars filled with red resin that people still step around. Srebrenica is a separate day and a long drive. These are led by people who were here, and the good ones do not perform it.

What it costs

What a day in Sarajevo or Mostar actually costs.

Every day out, grouped by price. A walk through Baščaršija costs less than lunch; a full Herzegovina loop with a driver is the other end of it.

Under $50

Old-town walks in Sarajevo and Mostar, the tunnel museum, and the shorter war tours.

$50–150

The full days: the Herzegovina loop, Mostar and Kravice from the coast, Srebrenica and back.

$150 and up

Private drivers, the multi-day runs, and cross-border transfers that sightsee the whole way.

Only here

Three things that only happen in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ottoman bridges and green rivers turn up all over the Balkans. A bridge people dive off for a collection, a tunnel dug under a live runway and a house built where a river leaves a cliff do not.

On the Trebižat

The Kravice Waterfalls

The Trebižat drops about twenty-five metres in a wide horseshoe of falls and lands in a pool you are allowed to swim in. Spring is when it is loudest and the spray reaches the path; by August the flow has thinned and the water is warm enough to stay in. Boats run across the pool, and the walk down from the car park is steeper than it looks coming back up.

Under the runway

The Tunnel of Hope

For most of the siege the only way in or out of Sarajevo was eight hundred metres of hand-dug tunnel running under the airport runway, propped with timber and barely wide enough for a wheelbarrow. Twenty metres survive under the house at the Butmir end, and you walk them stooped. Food, fuel, ammunition and about a million people went through.

At the spring

The Blagaj Tekke

The Buna comes straight out of the base of a two-hundred-metre cliff, cold and full-volume, and somebody in the sixteenth century built a dervish house against the rock beside it. You take your shoes off inside. The trout restaurants on the terrace below charge coast prices and everyone pays them anyway.

Four Bosnian days that run on somebody else’s calendar.

Most of this country can be arranged over a coffee the night before. These four depend on snow cover, snowmelt and fixed departure days, and none of them care when your bus gets in.

  1. 01Lukomir Highland Village HikeThe track over Bjelašnica is a summer road. Snow shuts the highest village in the country for months at a time.
  2. 02Tara River Rafting Day TourThe rivers run on snowmelt. Spring is high and fast, late summer is low and gentle, and the season in between is short.
  3. 03Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Study TourPotočari is around three hours from Sarajevo each way, so these go as fixed full-day departures rather than an afternoon add-on.
  4. 04Mostar and Kravica Waterfall Day TripSwimming below the falls is a summer arrangement. In spring the river is high and the pool is off.
Winter and rain

When Bjelašnica is under snow and the Neretva runs brown.

Bosnia has a real winter. Mountain roads close, the falls are too high to swim and half the Herzegovina loop turns into a long drive in the wet. Both cities are better indoors anyway: a tunnel museum, a copper workshop, somebody’s kitchen, and a coffee that takes an hour on purpose.
